Cody Sun, A Successful Rookie Season

With his first full season coming to a close Cody Sun of Immortals had a long year. He started out in the Challenger League on Dream team with Echo Fox’s current jungler Akaadian.  After losing 0:3 to the Cloud9 academy team he was picked up by immortals after Wildturtle wasn’t working out. He started his professional journey at IEM Gyeonggi, an international tournament. The team made it to the semifinals but lost 1-2 vs Kongdoo Monster from Korea. Although they lost, he put up a 3.4 KDA which is impressive for a professional debut on an international stage. During the spring split, they had a shaky performance with an 8-10 record and placing 7th at the end. Moving onward to the summer split we heard that Cody and Olleh were having communication issues and that it would be resolved this split.

Well, whatever they did to fix those issues worked as they started the season 7-1. They continued their heat streak and ended the season 14-4 tied for the first-place record with TSM. The played CLG in the semifinals. After winning a tough game one, Cody carried the team game two with Kog’Maw going 10/1/8 and then beating CLG 3-0. In the finals however, Cody and the boys did not look like the same team. Immortals lost to TSM in the finals 1-3 against TSM. This placed them second in North America allowing them to go to worlds.

After the loss to TSM, fans and analysts began to question the strength in Immortals. They showed a very weak early game, minimized Olleh’s play making abilities, and had no jungle synergy during the final series. The group drawings for worlds would place the team in group B. This group contained  Longzhu Gaming, Fnatic, GIGABYTE Marines and Immortals. People also questioned if Cody could compare the likes of the bot laners of his group such as Prey and Rekkles. During the first week the team went 2-1 but due to the “NA Curse” the team went 0-4 week 2 knocking them out of the world championship.

One of the games against fanatic, Cody made a questionable play that might have cost them the game (The play in question). During this time, he received a huge amount of backlash from the community. When asked about the play he said,” “I can truthfully say that I choked under pressure but I’m not going to let that stop me from making future #LCSBigplays. I messed up, but it’s a battle scar that I’ll wear proudly.” (Source)

Honestly, if a player sees a chance to make a good play, let them. Killing the mid laner and distracting the enemy team from getting objects looked like a good play but it was 100 dmg off. He doesn’t deserve to be called a bad player due to this play.  He had a higher KDA then Doublelift (2.8 vs 1.8) and had the 7th highest CS per minute in the tournament. Like he said, Come up with your head held high. He and the team had a great season with ups and downs. Just a shame that it had to end on a down.

What’s next for immortals? Currently, they were denied a spot for next year’s NA LCS (Source).
